Regular caster inspection helps identify loose mounts, damaged tread, bearing wear, debris, and brake problems before they make equipment difficult or unsafe to move.
Industrial casters operate close to the floor, where they collect string, chips, dust, moisture, and impact damage. Because the cart may still move after a caster begins to fail, wear can go unnoticed until steering becomes difficult or the load becomes unstable.
A simple inspection and maintenance routine can extend service life and help operators identify when a caster should be replaced rather than repaired.
Unload the equipment when practical and prevent it from rolling. If the cart or machine must be lifted, use rated lifting and support equipment on a stable surface. Never work under equipment supported only by a jack, forklift forks, or an improvised block.
Remove equipment from service if a caster is bent, cracked, loose, separating from the mount, or unable to retain the load safely.
The caster mounting plate or stem transfers every load and impact into the equipment frame. Check for:
• Loose or missing fasteners
• Elongated bolt holes
• Cracked welds or frame members
• Bent top plates or forks
• A stem that is loose, bent, or backing out
• Corrosion around the mount
• Distorted or unsupported mounting surfaces
Tighten hardware only to the equipment or caster manufacturer's specification. Repeated loosening may indicate a damaged mount, insufficient frame support, wrong fastener, or application problem that threadlocker alone will not solve.
Rotate the wheel and inspect the entire circumference. Look for flat spots, chunking, cuts, cracking, embedded metal, tread separation, swelling, or chemical attack.
Uneven wear may indicate overload, a misaligned rigid caster, constant skidding, debris around the axle, or a cart frame that is twisted. A wheel that no longer matches the diameter of the others can cause rocking and uneven load distribution.
Replace a damaged wheel with the correct diameter, width, bore, bearing, hub length, tread material, and capacity. A visually similar wheel may change the cart height or load rating.
String, plastic wrap, hair, wire, fibers, and metal chips can wind around the axle and force their way into bearings or seals. Remove debris with the caster unloaded and secured.
Do not pry against seals or cut toward your hand. If contamination has damaged the bearing or caused excessive play, replace the affected component.
Spin the wheel by hand and listen for grinding, clicking, or roughness. Check for side-to-side movement beyond the design allowance. A wheel that binds under load may have contamination, a damaged bearing, an overtightened axle, or a deformed hub.
Some bearings are sealed and require no added lubricant. Others have grease fittings or a specified lubrication procedure. Adding grease to a maintenance-free bearing does not improve it and may damage seals or attract dirt.
Use only the lubricant and interval specified for the caster and environment. Food, cleanroom, high-temperature, washdown, or chemical applications may require specialized products.
Turn the swivel fork through a full rotation. It should move smoothly without excessive looseness, binding, visible raceway damage, or unusual noise.
Inspect the kingpin or kingpinless raceway, seals, dust covers, and grease fittings where accessible. A caster that resists swiveling can make a cart suddenly change direction, increase operator effort, and cause wheels to scrub sideways.
Do not attempt to straighten a severely bent fork or weld a damaged caster assembly unless the manufacturer provides an approved repair method.
Operate each wheel brake, swivel lock, directional lock, or total-lock mechanism. Confirm that it engages and releases fully without excessive force.
A brake may fail to hold because of tread wear, contamination, incorrect adjustment, damaged linkage, or use on a surface or slope outside its intended conditions. Clean and adjust only according to the product instructions.
Brakes are not a substitute for wheel chocks, floor locks, or other restraints required by the application.
Repeated caster failure often points to a selection or operating issue. Review whether:
• The actual loaded weight exceeds the equipment rating.
• Uneven floors are shifting load onto fewer casters.
• The wheels are too small for cracks, thresholds, or debris.
• The tread material is incompatible with chemicals or temperature.
• The cart is being towed faster than permitted.
• Side impacts are bending forks or stems.
• The caster layout makes wheels scrub during turns.
Replacing the same caster without correcting the cause may lead to the same failure.
High-use, heavy-load, outdoor, washdown, or towed equipment should be inspected more often than a light cart moved occasionally on a smooth indoor floor.
A practical program may include:

• A documented visual and functional inspection at a regular interval
• Immediate inspection after an impact, overload, or handling incident
• Lubrication at the caster manufacturer's interval
